Japan Car DataEvery car on Japan's largest used-car marketplace, counted daily

Glossary

The words on this site, defined once. The surface uses the reader's word; the exact meaning lives here.

Our count
Every listing on the public sitemap of Japan's largest used-car marketplace, read once a day at 11:00 Japan time. Complete, sitewide only — it counts listings, it does not price them.
The marketplace's tally
The number the marketplace itself prints beside each maker and model in its menus, read daily. Complete, and the marketplace's arithmetic rather than ours; a model's change day to day is a net change (we cannot see arrivals and departures per model).
The listings we read
The sample. We open up to 2,000 listing pages a day (newest listings first, then re-reads) and keep what they say — asking price, grade, mileage, repair history. Every price, grade or repair figure on this site is of the listings we read, and says so.
Listing vs car
Counts on this site are of listings — one advert for one car. A car taken down and listed again is a new listing of the same car; we count both, and print how many were relisted each day. Headlines say "cars" because that is how people speak; the fine print says listings.
Newly listed
A listing that appeared on the marketplace since our previous count.
Relisted
A listing we had recorded as taken down that reappeared on the marketplace.
Taken down
A listing that was on the marketplace at our previous count and is not now. The marketplace does not say why; we do not guess.
Asking price
The price a listing shows. Asking is not sold — the marketplace publishes no sold prices, and neither do we. Where a Japanese listing shows two prices, our figures use the total payable (支払総額) unless they say otherwise.
Withheld price
A listing that says 応談 — price on request. Counted, never guessed, and left out of every price figure.
Median
The middle value: half the listings asked more, half asked less. Published from 12 priced listings; a histogram from 30.
"N priced" · "N checked" · "N read"
How many listings a sample figure rests on: priced = read and carrying a price; checked = read and carrying that field; read = opened in full.
Asking price of newly listed
The median asking price of the listings we read within a week of their going up. It describes new listings, not everything for sale — the whole-market figure waits until we have read a fifth of the pool.
Day
A UTC calendar day. Our count is taken once a day; a day with no completed count is a gap and stays one.
Not recorded
A day on which one of the counts did not complete. Nothing is filled in; changes that span the day say so.
Asking less
A listing whose total payable (支払総額) was lower the last time we read it than the first. The model-page figure is the share of the cars we read more than once that are asking less — a population we name, not the market's rate. Re-reads begin 19 AUG 2026; a change can be placed only inside the interval between two reads, and we never call it a discount.
Days on market
How long a listing stayed up: last seen minus first seen, in days. Published from 09 NOV 2026, once the record is 90 days old and most of a cohort has completed.
Model names as we map them
The marketplace lists models by Japanese name; we map the ones we can to the English names buyers use and keep the Japanese name beside them. Unmapped models keep their marketplace name — never a dash.
